How to write 925,000 in words

The number 925,000 is written “nine hundred and twenty-five thousand” in British English. Notice the word “and”: British English places it between the hundreds and the rest of the group. American English usually leaves it out. The hyphen in twenty-five is not optional – every compound number from twenty-one to ninety-nine is hyphenated.

925,000 in British and American English

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 925,000 becomes 9,25,000, read as “nine lakh twenty-five thousand” – or simply 9.25 lakh.

In Bangla, 925,000 is written ৯,২৫,০০০ using Bengali digits, and in words it is নয় লাখ পঁচিশ হাজার. Bangla has its own word for every number from one to ninety-nine, and above that it counts in হাজার (thousand), লাখ (lakh) and কোটি (crore), the same grouping used across Bangladesh and India.

Common mistakes when writing 925,000

• Missing the hyphen. nine hundred and twenty five thousand is a very common misspelling. Write nine hundred and twenty-five thousand.
• Dropping “and”. nine hundred twenty-five thousand is American usage. In British English write nine hundred and twenty-five thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 925k is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs nine hundred and twenty-five thousand or 925,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 925,000 has 6 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
