930,000 in British and American English

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 930,000 becomes 9,30,000, read as “nine lakh thirty thousand” – or simply 9.3 lakh.

Common mistakes when writing 930,000

• Dropping “and”. nine hundred thirty thousand is American usage. In British English write nine hundred and thirty thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 930k is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs nine hundred and thirty thousand or 930,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 930,000 has 6 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
