940,000 in British and American English

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 940,000 becomes 9,40,000, read as “nine lakh forty thousand” – or simply 9.4 lakh.

Common mistakes when writing 940,000

• Dropping “and”. nine hundred forty thousand is American usage. In British English write nine hundred and forty thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 940k is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs nine hundred and forty thousand or 940,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 940,000 has 6 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
