How to Write Large Numbers in Words: Thousands to Billions
Learn how to write thousands, millions and billions in words. Group-by-group method, comma placement, "and" placement and examples such as 1,200,000 in words.

Large numbers look intimidating in words, but they are built from small ones. Anyone who can write three hundred and sixty-seven can write three hundred and sixty-seven thousand, three hundred and sixty-seven million and so on. The whole skill is splitting the figure into groups of three.
Thousand, million, billion

Each step is a thousand times the last. Modern British English uses the same short scale as American English, so a billion is a thousand million everywhere. (The old British long-scale billion, a million million, was dropped in 1974 – see British vs American English numbers.)
The three-digit group method
- Put commas in the figure every three digits from the right: 367752 → 367,752.
- Name each group as a number from 1 to 999, using the normal rules (“and” after the hundreds, hyphens in compound numbers).
- Add the group word – billion, million, thousand – after every group except the last.
- Join them in order with nothing between them. Skip any group that is all zeros.
- If the last group is under one hundred and there is something before it, put “and” in front of it.

Words to figures
Going the other way, the group words tell you where the commas go. Write each group as exactly three digits, padding with zeros, and remember that a missing group is 000.
- one million two hundred and fifty thousand → 1 | 250 | 000 → 1,250,000
- two million and five → 2 | 000 | 005 → 2,000,005 (not 2,005)
- nine hundred and twenty thousand one hundred and five → 920 | 105 → 920,105

Large numbers in formal documents
- Contracts and wills usually give words then figures: two hundred and fifty thousand pounds (£250,000). If they disagree, the words normally prevail.
