This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

740,000 in lakh and crore (India, Bangladesh and Pakistan)

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 740,000 becomes 7,40,000, read as “seven lakh forty thousand” – or simply 7.4 lakh.

Common mistakes when writing 740,000

• Dropping “and”. seven hundred forty thousand is American usage. In British English write seven hundred and forty thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 740k is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs seven hundred and forty thousand or 740,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 740,000 has 6 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
