760,000 in British and American English

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 760,000 becomes 7,60,000, read as “seven lakh sixty thousand” – or simply 7.6 lakh.

Common mistakes when writing 760,000

• Dropping “and”. seven hundred sixty thousand is American usage. In British English write seven hundred and sixty thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 760k is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs seven hundred and sixty thousand or 760,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 760,000 has 6 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
