The number 780,000 is written “seven hundred and eighty thousand” in British English. Notice the word “and”: British English places it between the hundreds and the rest of the group. American English usually leaves it out.

780,000 in British and American English

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 780,000 becomes 7,80,000, read as “seven lakh eighty thousand” – or simply 7.8 lakh.

Common mistakes when writing 780,000

• Dropping “and”. seven hundred eighty thousand is American usage. In British English write seven hundred and eighty thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 780k is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs seven hundred and eighty thousand or 780,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 780,000 has 6 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
