The number 290,000 is written “two hundred and ninety thousand” in British English. Notice the word “and”: British English places it between the hundreds and the rest of the group. American English usually leaves it out.

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 290,000 becomes 2,90,000, read as “two lakh ninety thousand” – or simply 2.9 lakh.

Common mistakes when writing 290,000

• Dropping “and”. two hundred ninety thousand is American usage. In British English write two hundred and ninety thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 290k is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs two hundred and ninety thousand or 290,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 290,000 has 6 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
