How to write 310,000 in words

The number 310,000 is written “three hundred and ten thousand” in British English. Notice the word “and”: British English places it between the hundreds and the rest of the group. American English usually leaves it out.

310,000 in British and American English

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

310,000 in lakh and crore (India, Bangladesh and Pakistan)

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 310,000 becomes 3,10,000, read as “three lakh ten thousand” – or simply 3.1 lakh.

Common mistakes when writing 310,000

• Dropping “and”. three hundred ten thousand is American usage. In British English write three hundred and ten thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 310k is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs three hundred and ten thousand or 310,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 310,000 has 6 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
