This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 580,000 becomes 5,80,000, read as “five lakh eighty thousand” – or simply 5.8 lakh.

Common mistakes when writing 580,000

• Dropping “and”. five hundred eighty thousand is American usage. In British English write five hundred and eighty thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 580k is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs five hundred and eighty thousand or 580,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 580,000 has 6 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
