How to write 420,000 in words

The number 420,000 is written “four hundred and twenty thousand” in British English. Notice the word “and”: British English places it between the hundreds and the rest of the group. American English usually leaves it out.

Because 420,000 is below one thousand it is a single group: name the hundreds and stop. That gives “four hundred and twenty thousand”.

• US check: “Four hundred twenty thousand and 00/100 dollars”. American cheques drop the “and” after the hundreds and put it before the cents.
• Bangladesh, India and Pakistan: the currency word comes first and the amount is counted in lakh and crore – “Taka four lakh twenty thousand only”, with the figure written Tk. 4,20,000/=.

420,000 in British and American English

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

420,000 in lakh and crore (India, Bangladesh and Pakistan)

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 420,000 becomes 4,20,000, read as “four lakh twenty thousand” – or simply 4.2 lakh.

In Bangla, 420,000 is written ৪,২০,০০০ using Bengali digits, and in words it is চার লাখ বিশ হাজার. Bangla has its own word for every number from one to ninety-nine, and above that it counts in হাজার (thousand), লাখ (lakh) and কোটি (crore), the same grouping used across Bangladesh and India.

Common mistakes when writing 420,000

• Dropping “and”. four hundred twenty thousand is American usage. In British English write four hundred and twenty thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 420k is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs four hundred and twenty thousand or 420,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 420,000 has 6 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.

Half of 420,000 is 210,000 (two hundred and ten thousand). Double 420,000 is 840,000 (eight hundred and forty thousand).
