How to write 410,000 in words

The number 410,000 is written “four hundred and ten thousand” in British English. Notice the word “and”: British English places it between the hundreds and the rest of the group. American English usually leaves it out.

Because 410,000 is below one thousand it is a single group: name the hundreds and stop. That gives “four hundred and ten thousand”.

• Bangladesh, India and Pakistan: the currency word comes first and the amount is counted in lakh and crore – “Taka four lakh ten thousand only”, with the figure written Tk. 4,10,000/=.

410,000 in British and American English

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

410,000 in lakh and crore (India, Bangladesh and Pakistan)

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 410,000 becomes 4,10,000, read as “four lakh ten thousand” – or simply 4.1 lakh.

Common mistakes when writing 410,000

• Dropping “and”. four hundred ten thousand is American usage. In British English write four hundred and ten thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 410k is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs four hundred and ten thousand or 410,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 410,000 has 6 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
