How to write 840,000 in words

The number 840,000 is written “eight hundred and forty thousand” in British English. Notice the word “and”: British English places it between the hundreds and the rest of the group. American English usually leaves it out.

840,000 in British and American English

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

840,000 in lakh and crore (India, Bangladesh and Pakistan)

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 840,000 becomes 8,40,000, read as “eight lakh forty thousand” – or simply 8.4 lakh.

Common mistakes when writing 840,000

• Dropping “and”. eight hundred forty thousand is American usage. In British English write eight hundred and forty thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 840k is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs eight hundred and forty thousand or 840,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 840,000 has 6 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
