How to write 510,000 in words

The number 510,000 is written “five hundred and ten thousand” in British English. Notice the word “and”: British English places it between the hundreds and the rest of the group. American English usually leaves it out.

• Bangladesh, India and Pakistan: the currency word comes first and the amount is counted in lakh and crore – “Taka five lakh ten thousand only”, with the figure written Tk. 5,10,000/=.

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

510,000 in lakh and crore (India, Bangladesh and Pakistan)

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 510,000 becomes 5,10,000, read as “five lakh ten thousand” – or simply 5.1 lakh.

Common mistakes when writing 510,000

• Dropping “and”. five hundred ten thousand is American usage. In British English write five hundred and ten thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 510k is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs five hundred and ten thousand or 510,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 510,000 has 6 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
