How to write 480,000 in words

The number 480,000 is written “four hundred and eighty thousand” in British English. Notice the word “and”: British English places it between the hundreds and the rest of the group. American English usually leaves it out.

• Bangladesh, India and Pakistan: the currency word comes first and the amount is counted in lakh and crore – “Taka four lakh eighty thousand only”, with the figure written Tk. 4,80,000/=.

480,000 in British and American English

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

480,000 in lakh and crore (India, Bangladesh and Pakistan)

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 480,000 becomes 4,80,000, read as “four lakh eighty thousand” – or simply 4.8 lakh.

Common mistakes when writing 480,000

• Dropping “and”. four hundred eighty thousand is American usage. In British English write four hundred and eighty thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 480k is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs four hundred and eighty thousand or 480,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 480,000 has 6 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
