How to write 520,000 in words

The number 520,000 is written “five hundred and twenty thousand” in British English. Notice the word “and”: British English places it between the hundreds and the rest of the group. American English usually leaves it out.

520,000 in British and American English

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

520,000 in lakh and crore (India, Bangladesh and Pakistan)

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 520,000 becomes 5,20,000, read as “five lakh twenty thousand” – or simply 5.2 lakh.

Common mistakes when writing 520,000

• Dropping “and”. five hundred twenty thousand is American usage. In British English write five hundred and twenty thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 520k is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs five hundred and twenty thousand or 520,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 520,000 has 6 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
