How to write 250,000,000,000 in words

The number 250,000,000,000 is written “two hundred and fifty billion” in British English. Notice the word “and”: British English places it between the hundreds and the rest of the group. American English usually leaves it out.

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

250,000,000,000 in lakh and crore (India, Bangladesh and Pakistan)

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 250,000,000,000 becomes 2,50,00,00,00,000, read as “twenty-five thousand crore” – or simply 25,000 crore.

Common mistakes when writing 250,000,000,000

• Dropping “and”. two hundred fifty billion is American usage. In British English write two hundred and fifty billion.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, billion, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 250bn is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs two hundred and fifty billion or 250,000,000,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 250,000,000,000 has 12 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
