How to write 750,000,000,000 in words

The number 750,000,000,000 is written “seven hundred and fifty billion” in British English. Notice the word “and”: British English places it between the hundreds and the rest of the group. American English usually leaves it out.

• US check: “Seven hundred fifty billion and 00/100 dollars”. American cheques drop the “and” after the hundreds and put it before the cents.
• Bangladesh, India and Pakistan: the currency word comes first and the amount is counted in lakh and crore – “Taka seventy-five thousand crore only”, with the figure written Tk. 7,50,00,00,00,000/=.

750,000,000,000 in British and American English

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

750,000,000,000 in lakh and crore (India, Bangladesh and Pakistan)

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 750,000,000,000 becomes 7,50,00,00,00,000, read as “seventy-five thousand crore” – or simply 75,000 crore.

Common mistakes when writing 750,000,000,000

• Dropping “and”. seven hundred fifty billion is American usage. In British English write seven hundred and fifty billion.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, billion, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 750bn is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs seven hundred and fifty billion or 750,000,000,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 750,000,000,000 has 12 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
