How to write 3,500,000 in words

The number 3,500,000 is written “three million five hundred thousand” in British English.

The simplest method is to read the figure in groups of three digits from the left and name each group:

1. 3,000,000 is 3 in the millions place, so we write “three million”.
2. 500,000 is 500 in the thousands place, so we write “five hundred thousand”.
3. Join the groups in order, without “and” between them: “three million five hundred thousand”.

In running text the number is normally lowercase: “the fee is three million five hundred thousand pounds”. At the start of a sentence, in a heading, or on a legal document it takes capitals: Three Million Five Hundred Thousand. Formal documents often give both forms together, for example “three million five hundred thousand (3,500,000)”, so that a reader can check one against the other.

How to write 3,500,000 on a cheque

Banks read the amount in words as the legal amount, so it must be exact. Write the pounds in words, add the word pounds, and finish with only so that nothing can be added afterwards.

• With pence: add the pence after the pounds – “Three million five hundred thousand pounds and fifty pence only” for £3,500,000.50 – or write the pence as a fraction, “Three million five hundred thousand pounds 50/100”.
• US check: “Three million five hundred thousand and 00/100 dollars”. American cheques drop the “and” after the hundreds and put it before the cents.
• Bangladesh, India and Pakistan: the currency word comes first and the amount is counted in lakh and crore – “Taka thirty-five lakh only”, with the figure written Tk. 35,00,000/=.

3,500,000 in British and American English

3,500,000 is spelled exactly the same way – “three million five hundred thousand” – in British and American English. 3,500,000 in lakh and crore (India, Bangladesh and Pakistan)

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 3,500,000 becomes 35,00,000, read as “thirty-five lakh” – or simply 35 lakh.

3,500,000 in Bangla (বাংলায় ৩৫,০০,০০০)

In Bangla, 3,500,000 is written ৩৫,০০,০০০ using Bengali digits, and in words it is পঁয়ত্রিশ লাখ. Bangla has its own word for every number from one to ninety-nine, and above that it counts in হাজার (thousand), লাখ (lakh) and কোটি (crore), the same grouping used across Bangladesh and India.

Common mistakes when writing 3,500,000

• Pluralising the group words. It is million, hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 3.5M is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs three million five hundred thousand or 3,500,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 3,500,000 has 7 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
