How to write 610,000 in words

The number 610,000 is written “six hundred and ten thousand” in British English. Notice the word “and”: British English places it between the hundreds and the rest of the group. American English usually leaves it out.

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 610,000 becomes 6,10,000, read as “six lakh ten thousand” – or simply 6.1 lakh.

Common mistakes when writing 610,000

• Dropping “and”. six hundred ten thousand is American usage. In British English write six hundred and ten thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 610k is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs six hundred and ten thousand or 610,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 610,000 has 6 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
