How to write 650,000 in words

The number 650,000 is written “six hundred and fifty thousand” in British English. Notice the word “and”: British English places it between the hundreds and the rest of the group. American English usually leaves it out.

• Bangladesh, India and Pakistan: the currency word comes first and the amount is counted in lakh and crore – “Taka six lakh fifty thousand only”, with the figure written Tk. 6,50,000/=.

650,000 in British and American English

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 650,000 becomes 6,50,000, read as “six lakh fifty thousand” – or simply 6.5 lakh.

In Bangla, 650,000 is written ৬,৫০,০০০ using Bengali digits, and in words it is ছয় লাখ পঞ্চাশ হাজার. Bangla has its own word for every number from one to ninety-nine, and above that it counts in হাজার (thousand), লাখ (lakh) and কোটি (crore), the same grouping used across Bangladesh and India.

Common mistakes when writing 650,000

• Dropping “and”. six hundred fifty thousand is American usage. In British English write six hundred and fifty thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 650k is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs six hundred and fifty thousand or 650,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 650,000 has 6 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.

Other ways to write 650,000

Half of 650,000 is 325,000 (three hundred and twenty-five thousand). Double 650,000 is 1,300,000 (one million three hundred thousand).
