How to write 9,250,000 in words

The number 9,250,000 is written “nine million two hundred and fifty thousand” in British English. Notice the word “and”: British English places it between the hundreds and the rest of the group. American English usually leaves it out.

9,250,000 in British and American English

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 9,250,000 becomes 92,50,000, read as “ninety-two lakh fifty thousand” – or simply 92.5 lakh.

Common mistakes when writing 9,250,000

• Dropping “and”. nine million two hundred fifty thousand is American usage. In British English write nine million two hundred and fifty thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is million, hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 9.25M is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs nine million two hundred and fifty thousand or 9,250,000.
