How to write 999,999 in words

The number 999,999 is written “nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine” in British English. Notice the word “and”: British English places it between the hundreds and the rest of the group. American English usually leaves it out. The hyphen in ninety-nine is not optional – every compound number from twenty-one to ninety-nine is hyphenated.

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 999,999 becomes 9,99,999, read as “nine lakh ninety-nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine” – or simply 10 lakh.

• Missing the hyphen. nine hundred and ninety nine thousand nine hundred and ninety nine is a very common misspelling. Write nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine.
• Dropping “and”. nine hundred ninety-nine thousand nine hundred ninety-nine is American usage. In British English write nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine.
• Adding “and” between groups. nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand and nine hundred and ninety-nine is wrong – “and” only follows the hundreds, never the word thousand or million.
