890,000 in British and American English

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 890,000 becomes 8,90,000, read as “eight lakh ninety thousand” – or simply 8.9 lakh.

Common mistakes when writing 890,000

• Dropping “and”. eight hundred ninety thousand is American usage. In British English write eight hundred and ninety thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 890k is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs eight hundred and ninety thousand or 890,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 890,000 has 6 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
