690,000 in British and American English

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 690,000 becomes 6,90,000, read as “six lakh ninety thousand” – or simply 6.9 lakh.

Common mistakes when writing 690,000

• Dropping “and”. six hundred ninety thousand is American usage. In British English write six hundred and ninety thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 690k is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs six hundred and ninety thousand or 690,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 690,000 has 6 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
