How to write 110,000 in words

The number 110,000 is written “one hundred and ten thousand” in British English. Notice the word “and”: British English places it between the hundreds and the rest of the group. American English usually leaves it out.

Because 110,000 is below one thousand it is a single group: name the hundreds and stop. That gives “one hundred and ten thousand”.

In running text the number is normally lowercase: “the fee is one hundred and ten thousand pounds”. How to write 110,000 on a cheque

• US check: “One hundred ten thousand and 00/100 dollars”. American cheques drop the “and” after the hundreds and put it before the cents.
• Bangladesh, India and Pakistan: the currency word comes first and the amount is counted in lakh and crore – “Taka one lakh ten thousand only”, with the figure written Tk. 1,10,000/=.

110,000 in British and American English

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

110,000 in lakh and crore (India, Bangladesh and Pakistan)

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 110,000 becomes 1,10,000, read as “one lakh ten thousand” – or simply 1.1 lakh.

Common mistakes when writing 110,000

• Dropping “and”. one hundred ten thousand is American usage. In British English write one hundred and ten thousand.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, thousand, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 110k is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs one hundred and ten thousand or 110,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 110,000 has 6 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
