How to write 450,000,000 in words

The number 450,000,000 is written “four hundred and fifty million” in British English. Notice the word “and”: British English places it between the hundreds and the rest of the group. American English usually leaves it out.

• Bangladesh, India and Pakistan: the currency word comes first and the amount is counted in lakh and crore – “Taka forty-five crore only”, with the figure written Tk. 45,00,00,000/=.

450,000,000 in British and American English

This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

450,000,000 in lakh and crore (India, Bangladesh and Pakistan)

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, large numbers are grouped differently. After the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, and the units are lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 450,000,000 becomes 45,00,00,000, read as “forty-five crore” – or simply 45 crore.

Common mistakes when writing 450,000,000

• Dropping “and”. four hundred fifty million is American usage. In British English write four hundred and fifty million.
• Pluralising the group words. It is hundred, million, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Using shorthand in formal documents. 450M is fine in a message, but a cheque or contract needs four hundred and fifty million or 450,000,000.
• Miscounting the zeros. 450,000,000 has 9 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
