This is one of the numbers where the two spellings differ. British English keeps “and” after the hundreds; American English generally drops it.

Common mistakes when writing 5,250

• Dropping “and”. five thousand two hundred fifty is American usage. In British English write five thousand two hundred and fifty.
• Adding “and” between groups. five thousand and two hundred and fifty is wrong – “and” only follows the hundreds, never the word thousand or million.
• Pluralising the group words. It is thousand, hundred, never “hundreds”, “thousands” or “millions” after a number.
• Miscounting the zeros. 5,250 has 4 digits. Check the commas: every group between commas should have exactly three digits.
